Is Alcohol Server Training a legal requirement in the State of Washington?

In Washington, it is a legal requirement for alcohol servers to be trained in the service of alcohol on premises; therefore, supervisors, bartenders, and managers are all required to take this training.

Employees must complete this alcohol server training from Washington-certified training providers, i.e., TIPS, within 60 days of employment.
Always keep your MAST (Mandatory Alcohol Servers Training) permit and some valid identification for inspection purposes handy when serving alcohol. The employers might request a copy of your permit, but you should always keep the original permit for your record and timely use. In addition to the law, the availability of the MAST permit and identification will help keep the alcohol service accountable and legally compliant.

What is the Washington MAST permit, and why is it mandatory for all alcohol servers to undergo server training in the state?

A MAST permit is proof that one has completed the Washington State Mandatory Server Training and is subdivided into two permits: Class 12 and Class 13 permits.
Class 13 permits are for servers under the legal drinking age (18, 19, or 20). This permit allows one to take orders for alcoholic drinks, deliver them to customers, and serve the drinks into the customer’s glass while seated at the table.
When the person attains the age of 21, they may apply for or upgrade to a Class 12 permit, which affords the privilege to pour alcohol from taps, mix drinks, oversee operations of the establishment, and conduct alcohol tastings. One Class 12 permit holder must be present and working at an on-premises establishment at all times.

Here are a few objectives of TIPS Certificate Training:

– An awareness campaign and training directed towards alcohol-selling and serving professionals in responsible service practices.

– Identification of signs of intoxication and interventions that cut across different strategies; – Limiting incidents of DWI and alcohol-related fatalities

– Prevention of sales of alcohol to minors as well as underage drinking; – The establishment of safer environments within alcohol-serving environments.

– Education about liability along with state regulations and local ordinances regarding alcohol service for owners, managers, and staff.
