CA TIPS Certification

TIPS (Training & Intervention Procedures for Servers) is an approved training provider for the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) training program. The course aims to inform servers, bartenders, managers, and owners about their legal responsibilities when it comes to serving alcoholic beverages in a safe and responsible manner. Anyone who serves alcoholic beverages in a hotel, bar, or restaurant must complete this training.

Learning Objective – Responsible Beverage Service Training Program

The California TIPS certification is designed to educate students on how to identify the signs of intoxication and prevent underage drinking. It also teaches you about your legal responsibilities as someone who serves alcohol – such as checking IDs for those under 21 years old and refusing service to those who are obviously intoxicated. The training covers detecting fake IDs, dealing with difficult customers, and recovering alcohol losses.

Alcohol Server Certification California

As of July 1st, 2022, all servers and managers will be required to complete a mandatory alcohol server training. Our 3 hours TIPS On-Premise course is approved by ABC. Please ensure you have registered and obtained an RBS Server ID# from the RBS Portal. This information will be required on the registration form for your TIPS Certification course.

TIPS certification is valid for three years – you must complete the course and take the RBS Exam to be compliant with state regulations.

Responsible Beverage Service Certification Process

  1. Before you complete your registration for the TIPS Certification course, you must first obtain a Server ID# from California RBS. Please make sure the following information entered is IDENTICAL to your California RBS registration: Name, email address, and Server ID#. If any item is not IDENTICAL, your completion information will be rejected by the state.
  2. Register and complete your online TIPS Certification training. Once your completion information is processed by California ABC, you will receive a notification that the California RBS certification exam is available and must be completed within 30 days.
  3. Take the RBS Exam

What is the cost of the RBS Exam?

The cost to take this exam is $3.00 and it’s included in the registration process for RBS portal access. Once training has been confirmed by a recognized provider, you’ll be granted access to the exam with three attempts to pass with a 70% or better.

How do I register as an alcohol server with California ABC?

To become a registered alcoholic server with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, you will need to create an account on RBS Portal. Once the account is created, the alcohol server will need to select and complete the Server Registration form. There is a non-refundable $3.00 fee associated with the registration process. Watch a short video to learn how to register as an alcohol server or manager.

What is my RBS Server ID number?

You can find your Server ID in the “Server Certificate Details” box on your dashboard. It’s called “ID Number,” and it has nine digits.

How do I get a copy of my RBS certification?

There is no physical or downloadable RBS certificate available. Once you have completed the training and the certification exam, you will be issued a certification number which is valid for three years. This will be noted on your Alcohol Server’s Dashboard in the training history at the bottom of the page on your RBS Portal account.

How do I verify if an employee is RBS Certified?

You will be able to verify a server as RBS certified using their certification number and full name.

Do I need to retake the responsible beverage service training course if I recently completed one?

Yes. Unfortunately, none of the responsible beverage service providers offering services were approved by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for the upcoming statewide mandate. The mandate goes into effect as of 1st July 2022 and will require all servers and managers to complete their RBS exam by 31st August 2022.
